As incoming President, I am honored and excited to lead ACRH in taking the next steps towards fulfilling our mission of “A professional organization dedicated to the practice and public understanding of conflict resolution.”

The bedrock of our chapter is its members, and under Lori LaConta’s presidency last year we doubled ACRH’s membership. This year we will continue to build on that strong base by providing great programs, partnering with allied organizations and increasing the public presence of ACRH.

We asked our members to give feedback on last year’s program and tell us what future events they wanted. Based on their input, this year ACRH will focus on advanced skills training particularly in the areas of workplace, marketing and negotiation. Plus we will hold several fun events where members can socialize, network and meet friends.

Another key part of achieving our mission is creating partnerships with like-minded organizations. This year we have two major conferences in the Greater Houston area. The Texas Association of Mediators (TAM) will hold its annual conference in The Woodlands on February 24 & 25. Then, the International Ombudsman Association holds its conference from April 13 - 18 in Houston. ACRH is planning to participate in these conferences to further our common goals of providing professional development, fostering ethical practices and the advancement of conflict resolution practitioners.

Our mission includes promoting the public understanding of conflict resolution. However, today most people either do not know what we do or are confused by all the different terms we use. It is our responsibility to inform our potential clients what conflict resolution services are available. ACRH will further this goal by providing information specifically written for the public on our website. In addition, we will create a long-term marketing strategy to educate and promote conflict resolution practices.

Our members’ enthusiasm and energy makes what ACRH is today and will be tomorrow. We can achieve our mission with your help and support, whether coordinating one event, being our contact with a partner organization or providing content for the website. If you have ideas about how ACRH can further its mission or want to find out how you can shape our future then I encourage you to contact me or any member of the Board.

I look forward an exciting year and together making ACRH the first place practitioners and the public come for conflict resolution throughout the Greater Houston area.
